New Words Added To The Oxford Dictionary

The new trends in language has made the Britain’s Oxford University Press to add new words to its online Oxford Dictionaries.

Vanguard reports that the August Update of the OxfordDictionaries.com made it known that words like catfish, side boob, side-eye, neckbeard, hyberconnected, air punch, bare, baller, fratty, hench, bedroom tax and pharmacovigilance have been newly added to the dictionary . This wa done to move with the ongoing trend in the English language.

Other abbreviation like WDYT, meaning What Do You Think?, and YOLO, meaning You Only Live Once have also been added.

It was made known that some of these words are common internet slangs that needed to be inculcated in the English long list of words because of its general acceptance and its common usage. The editor of the Oxford Dictionaries, Katherine Martin, made it known in her words that: “These are words that are common enough that you are likely to encounter them, and may have to look up their meanings. Many may not make it into the more traditional Oxford English Dictionary.“For some of these, we will say ‘What was that?’ in a decade; others may become the next selfie,” she said, referring to last year’s most popular new entry.

“The English-speaking public will choose,’’ she said.

It would be recalled that just few months ago, the internet slang for a raunchy dance move called ‘twerk’ was added to the oxford dictionary.
